Nubie question: On each new print the initial 3 inches doesn't have the extruder

Nubie question: On each new print the initial 3 inches doesn’t have the extruder flowing filament correctly. If I push a little filament through then there is a stringer that gets left on the print and I have to snatch it off. If it is left alone to print at start by itself, it doesn’t print for 3 inches.

I’m using a Prusa i3 3dp08 by Hictop with cura 14.12 software.

Are you printing a skirt? I would suggest that.

Yeah that’s expected. Some people have actually set up automatic nozzle cleaning at the start of a print with a brush on the side and a gcode command.

Alternatively, you could add a skirt to each print and then your missing 3 inches will be from the skirt.

I was doing a pre-extrude but I had to watch and remove it right before the print started. It really isn’t necessary if you print a skirt.

Cura prints the skirt, but hairs (stringers) always end up on the bottom of each print. It’s not usually a big deal on big parts. On small parts?

Does Cura have a way to “print 3 inches over there, then do the rest?”

Right, make sure you include a skirt or brim. Skirt is much easier to remove though.

You can move the skirt further away. Or you can add a single layer object to print away from the actual print.

How does one get the gcode pre added? I’ll go see if cura allows me to plot some points and go as a prologue to each stl print.

If you have expert settings enabled go to the Start/End-Gcode tab

I’ll play with the skirt. That’s what it is there for… Thanks everyone

cura is stupid you better verify the gcode before printing

@christophe_malvasio How is Cura stupid?

I wouldn’t call any program stupid. You might call a programmer stupid, but then they might just hack into your house and destroy your network or something… So, let’s not offend anyone.

@Nathan_Walkner That is a standard feature and a ridiculous complaint. Please get off this thread your comment is unrelated and unproductive.

@Nathan_Walkner In Cura, the print button is replaced by the save button when you don;t have the printer connected. It is literally the exact same amount of slicing steps. I refuse to clog up this thread anymore with this unrelated and unproductive topic.

@Nathan_Walkner So your problem is with Repetier then not Cura…

Sorry to hijack this thread @Gary_Deen , one last comment.

@Nathan_Walkner Ultimaker has released Cura as an open source piece of software and Repetier has integrated it into their software. Ultimaker and the Cura developers are only responsible for the original Cura software, not what is in Repetier. So if you have a problem with Cura in Repetier, talk to Repetier.

@Gary_Deen How did you get with the skirt, have you had a chance to play any more?
