Older GLCD with flipped connectors

Hey everyone,

I’m the proud new owner of a smoothieboard, and am having a bit of trouble with the GLCD so I was hoping I could get some help. I have a “Robotale” GLCD that I purchased a few years ago, and was intending to use it on the new board with the GLCD shield. I noticed that on my GLCD, the keys on the connectors on the back face down instead of up like the newer ones seem to, so I re-did the ribbon cables to compensate for the key on the connector facing the wrong way. I also removed the 5v diode from the shield and installed an onboard regulator.

Unfortunately, when I power the board up I get the screen lighting up and something in the back gets very hot, but that’s all I get. Not sure what else to try, and since I can’t find much info on this screen, I can’t tell if maybe it’s an old revision that’s just not compatible or something like that. Any help would be appreciated!

Did you actually try them the way they were originally plugged around ?

Yeah, that’s how I started. Thankfully I had a spare screen, because the first one let the smoke out when I first plugged it in, which was what tipped me off to the difference in orientation vs the new screens.

Got a link to your exact model of screen ?

Hm, I believe this is the one: hobbyking [dot] com/hobbyking/store/850013D_Printer_Full_Graphic_Smart_Controller_RAMPS_RepRap_.html

Those are clones, they have pretty bad quality, we’ve seen quite a few destroy Smoothieboards completely.
They do indeed have the connectors reversed,.

Huh, interesting that they both worked perfectly on an atmega based board… Well, I’ll check the pinouts one more time then. Thanks.
