3 part question,
1.for the inductive npn sencer, is it literaly power and earth the sencer (no transiters or resisters required) from any of the board’s 12v power inputs, and then use one of these pins p1.22, p1.23, p1.30, or p1.31 to attach the signal wire? (because the endstop pins wont work with a resitered inductive sencer). does the signal wire need a resister or something to regulate to a certain voltage?
(the short version to that question is how do you wire an inductive sencer to the smoothieboard).

  1. soldering to the smoothie board, what is the best way, i cant get the solder to take to the pin header, the board gets seriously hot, will the solder from the surface mount stuff go liquid before the pin header solder takes?

3.how do i change the stepper motor steps from 16 to 8 or any other amount of steps?

Hey.

  1. Smoothie’s input require a 5V signal. If your sensor does not output 5V, you need a voltage divider. Because there are so many sensors, the documentation only covers the basics at the moment ( which is much more than what you’d get for many other systems by the way ).

  2. Smoothie is very well heatsinked ( which is a very good thing, which you want ), it will take a lot of heat and a lot of time to solder some things, especially to the ground planes. That is normal, you should not worry about it, have patience, and it will work.

  3. JP31 and JP36, between the M1 and M2 drivers, set the microstepping for all drivers together. This is not an officially supported feature, so it is not documented. Why would you want to change the microstepping ?

I find it a little weird that you would complain about the documentation, when the general message we get from users, is that our documentation is much better than what they can find for other systems … we actually put an insane amount of work into it, and “having a great documentation” is one of the main goals of the Smoothie projects.

Of course the documentation does not contain *everything* ( it can not, and the questions you had are not common ones ), but that is what the community is for, and if you had asked about those things you would have gotten an answer quite quickly I’d expect.

16 to 8 step…
i had prints running at over a 100mm/s to a reasnable finish, as in the odd kick on the corners etc, and part to part usable, but the 16 steps seemed to run me right down to 45-50 on small parts, slower for longer sides, as the plastic pinged free like an elastic band…may have been the nozle diameter step up, i never got to the bottom of it, but as far as i could make out i couldnt get the exstruder to put there plastic down in time, the extrution ‘dragged’ what ever i did, bar turning the speed right down.
so i thought it might be worth a try at a later date to see if the step change made the diference, or it was purely the larger nozle diameter.
(as a side note, i could run the smoothie at 400% of the the old boards 90mm/s…it ran smoother, much smoother, apart from the elastic ping issue lol.)

apologies for the post, but it was/is getting me really angry that simple things are made so damned hard for the lack of one tiney bit of information…the key bits are with held painstakenly to the bitter end…(in general)

Hi there.

Smoothie is by far the best documented CNC firmware around. I welcome you to go look at the documentation for Marlin, Repetier or ReprapFirmware etc …

We actually *want* people to use the board, have fun with it, and do what they want to do. That is *why* we made a board.

A lot of effort has gone into this documentation, it is the most complete you will find around. It does not contain *everything*, because that would essentially be impossible.

After having the community put so much effort into this documentation, I am sorry to say that you implying that we are trying to keep some things secret, is pretty much insulting.

What you tried to do, and did not find information about, are not common things that everybody does. They are un-common things, and are what the forums or IRC are for.
