Open source 3D-scanners, I’ve tried looking into this subject , but I can’t seem to find any decent project .
Can you guys recall some?
Looking for scanning small objects.

Do you think one can build a decent one for less than makerbot’s digitizer for $1400?

The internet is littered with projects like these that were started, worked on for a while, and then apparently abandoned (or get as far as a rough working proof of concept, then say “this will improve with more work” and no more work is done). The hardware seems (relatively) simple, it’s the software that people get bogged down on and quit with.

But, this project: http://hci.rwth-aachen.de/fabscanCUBE seems to have gotten to the point of working decently well and has remained slightly active to judge by their google group.

Another option is closed source software (http://www.david-3d.com/) powered by self-made open source hardware (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:101783).

There’s also a relatively populated forum for just this topic, too: http://www.diy3dscan.com/

Here’s one more, too - http://www.metaingegneria.com/scanner-laser-3d/

$1400 is way over the odds clones will be weeks behind for less. I think their software is driving the price. If that’s the case no wonder they stopped open source.

Not open source, but if you don’t find anything:

Have a look at structured light scanning.

Its free and you only need a projector and a webcam. 3 frames is enough to make a good 3d model.
