Hype. I’d actually say we’re at the top of a bubble at the moment.
I think it too. When you’re at the top this usually happens http://247wallst.com/technology-3/2013/12/27/short-sellers-retreat-from-3d-printing-sector/
But, it could be a very good thing
Sound like bubble, bust, then steady growth. So how to take advantage of the shakeout. At my low level I’d like a second hand machine that has multiple extruders and a larger build volume
Long term the growth prospects will be huge, but there will probably be a lot of consolidation first.
and a lot of new ideas I hope ! New players will emerge also.
I believe that there will be a lot of IP hoarding by way of patents, trademarks, and copyrights that will attempt to choke the life out of it and remove any sense if fun.
I don’t think it’s the price. You can buy printers well below $1000. I think the two main areas are
a) print quality and ease of achieving it
b) handling of intellectual property by patent holders (of 3d printing technologies and printable objects)
@Kai_Laborenz I Believe (B) that’s almost a decisive factor for consumers and designers.
@Robert_Roberto Speed and volume of printing will be another decisive factor. in that sense I believe that start-ups like deltaprintr are in the right track.
