Will this impact open/community development of 3D printing?
For pure development? No. (Disclaimer: I Am Not A Lawyer) The patent system allows for R&D.
The moment you start to use a (still active) patented technology (that you built yourself; using an Afinia machine wouldn’t automatically put you at risk if Stratasys should happen to be successful) for production purposes like printing off RepRap parts for sale or to sell such patent-encumbered devices then you would risk becoming a target.
Thing is if Stratasys have infringed on somebody’s else patent which seems to be the case it could get rather interesting.
