Hey all,
I have built a Raspberry PI distro that has OctoPrint pre installed! Also mjpg-streamer.
You can get it here:

The build scripts are available in the github page
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Looks very promising. A few questions.

Other than in concept, I am new to Raspberry PI; Is there a source you recommend to
a) purchase one from?
b) Get it configured to the point where I could follow your build scripts?

For the mpeg streaming, is that using the RaspBerry PI camera or will that with with a USB connected webcam on the USB port?

Are you aware of other distros that have OctoPrint preinstalled, perhaps for use on a PC (for starters) ?

Eric octoprint is a open source software created for a raspberrypi although it can be tweak to be install on other Linux distros

Since you are based in the usa I could suggest amazon search (raspberrypi mobel B 512mb ) don’t pay more than $35.00. you will also need buy a SD card and a power cord.

Once installed this will give you the ability to print remotely to your printer via a web GUI from anywhere in the world or even within your house. Also you have the ability to record or watch the print live via a webcam.

For more information on octoprint goto http://www.octoprint.org which is acually a fork of cura which can be install on windows

@Eric_Mack b) the point of OctoPI is that you install this distro on an S, pass the config wizard, connect the printer, and you are ready to print.

Thanks, guys. I get the point of OctoPrint. What I am less familiar with (read: no hands on experience yet) is the process of going from vanilla RaspBerry Pi to a loaded OS to then finally install the OctoPrint software.

Eric, that is the easy part all you do is install the os / image on your SD card insert into your raspberry pi and thats you have a running octoprint … The script is just the source code how the octoprint is loaded on the raspi. You really don’t need the code or even care how the script works just need the distro

Ok, thanks. I guess that was the part that was unclear to me. I had assumed (incorrectly) that you had to get an OS running first before you could install the application - in this case OctoPrint.

So it sounds line I can use my Windows PC to populate the SD card with the OctoPrint setup and boot the RaspBerry Pi from that. From there, should be able to do the rest via the web. Sweet.

Thank you.

You got it, its really easy.

I guess we need to split the README to developers and users so they don’t get confused.

I think that would be a great help.

I found the Pi on Amazon for $43 including shipping.
http://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-Model-Revision-512MB/dp/B009SQQF9C

The description mentions that it does not include mpeg licenses and that those must be purchased separately. I assume that is to be able to play meg not to stream a webcam feed?

I want to keep the topic on 3d printing. My interest is as a print server for OctoPrint.

@Eric_Mack rs-components, I got mine from there, it came in a small plastic box too. I think it was $43 too. Might be less

http://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi/raspbrry-modb-512m/model-b-assembled-board-only/dp/43W5302 this where I bought my $35

You can still stream video that just a extra licenses that you don’t need

@Marvin_Stuart You can stream fine with no license. OctoPi comes with mjpg-streamer. http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/mjpg-streamer/index.php?title=Main_Page#About_the_project

Just received a raspberry pi and wifi dongle from Amazon. First step completed - booting Noob and then Raspian. Now to deal with Wifi and then the adventure begins to get the above OctoPrint distro loaded. While I’m not a linux guy I understand the concepts. We’ll see how big the leap is from concept to practice…

@Eric_Mack You shoudl try out OcroPi
It will save you loads of time figuring out how to install Octoprint on Raspbian, and have webcam support.

Guy, Marvin, I could use some help. Are either of you available to talk by Skype on how to set this up.

Turn on you Skype
