This has been posted a few times. It still looks creepy to me!

@Carlton_Dodd there reason for that creepy, it’s s communication from the creature living under the oceans of Europa

How is 3D printed product better than injection molded?

One offs

Maybe I do not see the application for this new method of production. Perhaps to produce parts in low gravity? Either way, current manufacturing methods are better than this hyped up fad.

Rapid prototypes. Education.

@Frankie_Costello yes it is true that the media over hypes 3D printing. and it is also true 3D printing will never replace injection molding, or even by used for large scale manufacturing in the near future. but what you fail to understand is that it was never intended for manufacturing. 3D printer is more intended for making prototypes and samples before the injection molding or even metal casting process begins. it costs only a few dollars to print are medium size part. but to make the tooling for injection molding costs 10’s of thousands of dollars, and takes a long time.
also 3d printing is pretty fun and that is why it has taken off in the hobby and maker community.

Too true.

@Frankie_Costello
I use it for one-off custom parts, and for rapid prototyping with iterative design. I designed my own extruder, and went through 10 physical iterations in two days!

I am just accustomed to putting out 100s if not 1000s of parts an hour, but of course the barriers to market entry are lower for a printer. I did not see this trend coming a decade ago. 3D production may leave many of my tradesmen looking for work. Alas myself along with them.

Change is constant. You can adapt, or you can get left behind.

@Frankie_Costello if 3d printing fulfills its potential (and I think it will) it could remove centralisation of the manufacturing process - parts could be printed by the user from a downloaded design rather than being mass produced in China and shipped around the world. To do this the price needs to come down and the quality to go up but the potential is huge. It could bring manufacturing back to the Western world.
