What I did instead of sleeping last night…

So my main printer forever known as “The Box” was in need of some serious updates. It was printed on my first gen Prusa, that was way out of calibration, and generally just didn’t print that great due to many things. Luckily all the parts were printed on it, so the issues matched up and until now it was doing a decent job.

Finally the extruder fan went out and I decided to not fix it again, with out a redo. So I give you, The Box-V_Slot edition. Using modified carriages I designed for my laser, I took the original model and designed drop in mounts for the new V-slot rails. The belts got re-ran and the X axis motor was also upgraded. All in all I dropped about 75% of my weight from my 12mm steel rails to the aluminum of the gantry.

I also upgraded from my hacked Air-tripper extruder to @Eclsnowman 's excellent Hercustruder, but added one as well.

For my hotend, I ran with the modular drop in plate idea @LulzBot uses on the TAZ machines, because its awesome, and made a modular plate to handle my new Legends Pack from E3d.

What you see here is the first print, with no calibration an extruder values I pulled out of my sleep crazy butt, because it was 3am by the time I got to firmware.

All in all the whole conversion was probably about 12 hours, but well worth it. The performance of the printer is night and day, its even quieter. And the Cyclops.

Also, @Simplify3D your dual extrusion support is awful. Purge walls, seriously.

Looking great man.

This was all a means to an end to get a work horse for the printer I want to build, but now Im starting to love this thing again. It gets a little less hacky with every mod.

Can you share the files please

I plan to once I know its all good. Give me a couple days.

All Im going to share is the v-slot stuff. The rest of the machine is a mess and is a cluster of redesigns around the box frame. Not really of use to anyone who wants to stay sane.

Isn’t the cyclops great? I can’t wait to get my replacements back

It strips super easy though…

What strips so I know

The nozzle threads on the heater block.

I removed it to clean it after an issue. Then when I threaded it back in it stopped out

Word to the wise. If you’re doing a single extruder print be sure to purge the idle channel with a filament stable at high temp like xt or PET

on your Y motor you should use a long rod with bearings and a reprap z coupler to make it so you only need one motor on the Y that way you wont ever get just one motor skipping a step and binding up

That’s basically how I did it. The y motor is driving a rod on the from of my machine.

Oh okay. I couldn’t tell from the angle things were taken.
