I use original Printrbot’s Alu handle with horizontal metal bracket and it works well (with spacers against collision between spool and Y arm). The friction is low and filament is not loose on the spool.

Hi @John_Car , while I recognize there is some value in your design, I actually came to the conclusion that zero friction is actually not desirable for the following reason:

  1. It becomes too easy to unwind a significant amount of filament and rewinding it could actually be a possible source of problem.
  2. If your extruder isn’t able to absorb the little friction necessary to unwind the spool, you’re probably have something else wrong anyway.
Maybe adding some adjustable friction mechanism would make this the perfect spool… Am I alone here?

Works good for me.

I really like that it can accommodate many different size spools. The marbles as bearing also work very well.
