I started here last year too. Good source. (And E3D V6 documentation on-line is enhanced meanwhile, so it should be easier a bit.)

So you did the upgrade? Tell me was it worth the effort?

Yes, it was. The quality of prints is visible better.

@John_Car Some older print samples with Printrbot Simple Metal, E3D V6 and Simplify3D: http://www.3dhubs.com/brno/hubs/tom (additional area cooling fan for PLA used as well.)

Well I will be doing the upgrade, ordered parts. Do you know were I can download the upgraded firmware with the added changes already done and complied?

I used one from Aistaca, the author of E3D V6 adapter: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:559657. But there were some bugs with auto levelling (and I have also larger bed upgrade), so I mixed my own from the original one made by Printrbot. As I had never compile the firmware before, video guide from Thomas Sanladerer was very handy: https://youtu.be/2RbcMvhatjU (an there is also advanced guide, next part). But it’s 9 months ago and after it I have several others desktop 3D printers to test or assembly (incl. https://youtu.be/aIxqGFS5uKQ), so my memories are not so fresh.
