How 3D printing can be usefull at work?
This week I have designed a simple tool that make us save a lot of time.
We are making stainless steel boxes for speakers (I designed it for a famous boat company). A fixing plate have to be fix on the speaker and it was very hard to screw because the acess was limited and a normal tool was attracted by the magnet from the speaker. I solved the problem with this simple tool, took 6 minutes to print, my first print with smoothieboard.
And yes…I am proud
Awesome! This kind of thing can help promote 3d printing, custom tool costs are enormous. I wonder how much other solutions cost compared to your printed tool? Maybe make a full blog post on this with the cost savings to promote 3d printing? probably do a lot more than another frog or vase… which I am guilty of printing a ton of now myself
I have been asking my boss for a 3d printer for years, he always asked what would we use it for. we got one and have been using it nonstop for the past few months, we have created so many custom fixtures and enclosures that now I’m asking for more 3d printers.
We had some very large aluminum boxes welded out of plates. I had to cut a large window out of the front of them. I made H shaped parts that I could drop in sideways and rotate them in the slot that the end mill was cutting as it went around the perimeter. That kept the window from sagging down and breaking the end mill as it finished the cut out. Then we put a couple screw drivers in the slots, pulled out the plastic parts and lifted the window out of the hole. Worked great!
I love it when my hobby helps solve a problem at work!
Fantastic. I did a very similar tool, I call it “The Wrench Of Holding”. Main difference is that I added a hole for the screw. Now I’ll be doing some more for Nyloc & acorn nuts…
