The next CNC project!

Hi Sam, I am ignorant to what these pieces are could you enlighten me?

Looks like he’s going to build a plasma cutter.

Looks like a 3d printer hot end to me.

I think I would more likely believe plasma cutter looking at the current carrying capacity of the terminals in the picture. Not that I have ever seen a plasma cutter.

I do not see an airflow so I would rule out a plasma cutter. Such a larger copper terminal suggests me a spot welder (but I am curious about what it really is).

You are right, I don’t know why I said plasma cutter when it’s obviously a big-assed anode. Good call.

Very close indeed! Its a engine glow plug attached to the tip of a copper earth rod!! 350 watts of wood burning power at the fraction of a cost of a laser printer! I will post some photos of how far I’ve got with it.

Now that’s a good idea!

Thanks!! @Mark_Fuller after researching the price of laser cutters this ones comes out at a fraction of the cost. The aim is to use the burner to engrave and then the router to cut everything out.

How are you going to keep the burner in contact with the workpiece?

A 1W blue laser should be pretty cheap and it will work for engraving wood with the added advantage of using less energy and being non-contact, which most likely will allow thinner lines. Anyway, please report back your results as yours is an interesting approach.

Is it diy or purchased?
An article about would be interesting

@Mike_Thornbury Spring loaded like a vinyl cutter?

@Mike_Thornbury from the test I’ve done so far I’ve used the engraving setting on my milling machine which proves to be working quite well! At the moment its at a depth of 0.5mm.

@Miguel_Sanchez I did consider that, the one thing I wanted was to burn far faster than a 1 W laser and when this think gets going it can burn really quickly. Plus for the designs I want to do the style in which it burns I personally thing is prettier than with a laser

@Off-grid_Denmark this is a diy project of mine, a cheaper alternative to a laser cutter. I will be happy to answer any questions. And article is a good idea. Have to see what I can do when its done
