A few tips about scanning sculptures using 123D Catch or Agisoft:

  1. Clean = bad. For best results I splatter paint and scribble on the object. More details gives the photogrammetry tool points to “lock-on” and then track across several frames.

  2. Use something with a lot of detail as the base (like a book)

  3. Uniform light across all photos. I use a DSLR with an external flash pointing up, bounced off the ceiling.

Oops, duh Ed. Sorry, I read the steps and bypassed the link. The results look really good.

74 pictures, the sculpture was on a rotating platform and the camera on a tripod. I rotated a few degrees (by hand), snap a picture with the camera’s IR remote, repeat. Did a full circle like that, then lower the camera a bit and did a second full circle.
