POV-Staff: FastLED on a Teensy, APA-102C LEDs (3x144)

Very nice patterns!

Wow that is cool.

What do you use to power all those LEDs?

Two 18650-size Li-Ion batteries.

Haven’t measured, but at least a few hours. Certainly depends on the imagery and brightness levels.

How did you coordinate the patterns with the RPM? Did you just have to spin it at a certain speed for the patterns to appear?

No, the imagery adjusts to rotation speed, within a certain reasonable range. Seonsor is a mercury tilt switch ($1.89 from Frys) at the center of gravity. Triggers an interrupt in the code, which then runs a sort of a phase-locked loop.

@Yanek_Martinson That is awesome! Are there any more details about your build process and the components used? I would love to try and replicate it.

I haven’t written anything up, but but I’ll help and answer questions.

How did you house everything inside the stick? Was is split in the center, or did you have the MCU and batteries on one of the ends?

The housing is a hollow tube of polycarbonate, interior diameter is .75" which just fits the electronics and the batteries. I have built them in various configurations, with batteries and electronics all in the center and the LEDs out to the ends; with the electronics in the center and the batteries in the ends, and finally with both batteries and electronics in the ends.

@Yanek_Martinson Is the weight inbalance noticable when you have the electronics on the end? How are the strips and electronics secured inside the tube? Is there anyway you could take some pictures of the configuration inside the tube?

I always keep it precisely balanced. Two batteries of the same size, positioned at equal distances from the center. Electronics either in the middle, or evenly distributed, or counterbalanced by an equal weight, such as of foam, or even tape on the outside.

@Yanek_Martinson Excellent pictures, you did a real good job of documenting everything. I might try and build one in the near future.

Hi,what are you use for image converter? I use poisonic but i like to experiment with other convertors. Thanks

@Saso_Dzuljo_Petrovsk GIMP has a very useful ability to export directly to C source (.h and .c) formats.

do you have any pov patterns you could share? I’m working on putting more into an led hoop using fastLED
