Printing ABS on the Makerbot Z18 I'm an unfortunate owner of the Makerbot Z18.

@NathanielStenzel history has shown its the opinion of the Patent Clerk that matters…unfortunately.

@Mike_Miller which is why patents in the USA suck. The patent clerk will award a patent to taking a shit on a cold and stormy night.

@NathanielStenzel Like I said, there’s a bias that comes into play once something is put into the public domain. Of course it’s dead simple to us that printing ABS in a heated enclosure will make it work better, but when the technology was new no one knew that it was a thing until it was discovered. Thusly it was novel. The novelty is that 3d printing in an enclosed heated area improves print quality.

I’m not really here to say it’s right or wrong, but just stating why it’s patented. You can always fight the patent if you don’t think it’s novel, but that’s expensive and arduous.

@Mike_Kelly_Mike_Make heh. It makes me think about a book I read that mentioned the Russians had to do something different when mixing mortar to make it set in their cold weather. I do not remember it clearly, but that is also vaguely related to 3D printing. Sometimes having a cold building area can cause a few issues. The Russians seem to have adapted to it though.
