Printing with Cura on an ultimaker original.

Printing with Cura on an ultimaker original. Yesterday it started shifting each layer about 5mm to the left…sort of creating a leaning tower of Pisa if you get the picture. I checked the belts and made sure nothing was catching in any movement. nothing helped.

In thinking about it last night, I realized that the last successful print was a long one that I had to turn at a 45 degree angle so it would fit on the platform. As a last resort I tried turning the current print at a 45 degree angle and it printed perfectly…I’m clueless as to why this fixed the problem.

I would appreciate any insights as to what might have happened. I’m in a time crunch and will continue to rotate everything 45 degrees if it continues to work, but I am curious and worried that there might be some other problem lurking, because this doesn’t make sense to me.

Thanks.

Just a wild guess: at 45 degrees you would have altered how the X/Y steppers dance. Like instead of just both motors working down one side, now just on is reducing the current draw? Or the opposite, where before there was just one motor working, but now at 45degrees they both are, but at only 1/2 speed - maybe bearing are binding?

Another possibility is set screws. I was printing Abe Lincoln, looked like Medusa when finished…

This page can help with various Ultimaker printing problems, it has also a shifted layers chapter.
