Printrbot  metal simple: Extensions I thought I was smart when I ordered a microSD

@Printrbot metal simple: Extensions

I thought I was smart when I ordered a microSD to SD card adapter. :wink: The slot on the PrintrBoard is quite hidden underneath the printbed. This way I expected to get an easier way of fiddling with the memory card.

But no luck! The PrintrBoard was not able to read the card. The adapter itself worked nicely on my computer. So, any advice what I can do to get that thing working?

Please note not all the cards are supported. A low capacity, old card, will have more chances to work. Not sure about the details but in here http://reprap.org/wiki/Sdramps it states Kingston not being supported as they do not work with SPI.

@Miguel_Sanchez OK, but when I directly plug the card into the printrboard, it works fine.

Our printer control boards access SD cards in a different way than computers, and not all SD cards support that. So… try a different card?

EDIT: Looks like I’m too late…

Strange the adapter wouldn’t work, as I understand it there is really nothing inside one of those adapters, it’s just extra plastic and some wiring to extend the contacts.

I have had those micro to SD adapters not work very well. I had to add a piece of paper or to on the Micro so it would make contact with the adapter.

More specifically, try a < 2Gb card formatted by a PC using FAT16 (rather than FAT32 or exFAT)

Sorry, I did not get that plugged to Printrboard worked and it was the adapter what was not working. It then sounds like a noise problem (provided adapter uses the same pins) or a firmware problem (in case adapter uses different pins). For the former you can try to shield the flat cables with aluminium kitchen film connected to GND (temporary test).

I use a similar adapter on my 2013 simple. There was a chip capacitor on the small circuit board inside the black cover. Once I removed that, it worked fine.

@John_Rice Did you just remove it, I mean unsolder and that’s it?

Yes. I just unsoldered it. It was the only part of the adapter that was not just a straight through wire, so I guessed it was the problem. The capacitor only seemed to cause trouble with the printrboard. It worked elsewhere with the capacitor in place.

@John_Rice OK, I did it. But actually, there where two capacitors! First I removed the bigger one: Didn’t help. Then I removed the tiny one: Yes, that did the trick. :slight_smile: May I resolder the bigger capacitor back? Please don’t say yes! :wink:

+Peter van der Walt Thanks for the tip. :slight_smile: I first tried the solution from @John_Rice and it works fine.
