Quick shot of the pushbutton I mentioned in my last post. Hopefully I got the wires color-coded correctly this time. Will test tonight and tomorrow, and will post pics and a video of the end result.

Is there an addressable RGB LED inside the switch?

@Jason_Coon Yep, that’s what I managed to do (after blowing one LED up via wrong polarity). The switch came with only a standard white LED for illumination, which I removed. I have tested it and it looks really nice but don’t currently have a good place (or good camera) to record a demonstration video.

@marmil Thanks!
I thought about using standard analog RGB LEDs as I’m only needing two of these buttons on my project, but it felt more sensible to reduce that 6 wires to 1 wire AND make extra use of FastLED which I’m already using.
I’m honestly surprised that it’s impossible to buy this particular type of pushbutton with RGB illumination of any sort.

How hard was it to swap it out? Seems like it’d be hard not to destroy the button. I have a few of these, might have to try it.

@Jason_Coon Just posted an overview. Bear in mind, some buttons that look like that are actually fully molded shut and cannot be opened by unclipping or cutting plastic pieces, so check that if you’re going to attempt this. Also, momentary buttons (the easiest type to use for lighting projects anyway) are much easier to reassemble than latching switches.

@Jason_Coon I’ve just taken a look at the switches Adafruit has, and unfortunately it seems like they’re not openable :frowning: Other cheaper suppiers will have switches which are just clipped together, but I must warn you that a lot of them label latching switches as momentary / vice-versa so watch out when buying.

EDIT: In the video on Adafruit’s channel where they announced those buttons arriving (way back in 2012), they mention that RGB is not possible from the manufacturer but “you could always crack one open and hack it in” :smiley: (Not the specific ones they sell though, as they are definitely molded)
