Quite a mix of printers at the Southampton RepRap User group today. The wooden box is a “school safe” Prusa i3, there’s my i2 next to a pile of fail as apparently ABS stopped sticking to Kapton at the end of 2013 and a Formlabs, which is every bit as hard to use as a FFF type printer as it proved when the parts kept falling into the juice.
Nice! Any published designs for the boxed i3? Also what’s that about ABS and kapton?
I’ll ask Matt if he can publish his design, he’s made a couple now.
And the ABS thing, I used to be able to get ABS to stick so well to kapton that I could hardly get the parts off, then I printed PLA for like 6 months because of a project, now I’ve forgotten how to make Kapton work, apparently. It’s a mystery I’ll solve later.
@Bracken_Dawson , make sure you clean the kapton well with alcohol, any fingerprints or oils will make it hard for the ABS to stick

Would you recommend a form 1 or not?
Nope. It had fine detail on the prints that worked but seems like a total PITA to operate with many failed prints. And the juice is expensive, and its perspex tray needs to be replaced every so often as the laser turns it opaque.
Interesting, I’ve been considering getting one for a while because of the high quality but it sounds disappointing. I have a toss up between the ultimaker, makerbot 5th gen 4th gen and the form1, which one would you recommend?
I’d go ultimaker. I use a replicator 2x at work. It’s ok, but proven to be unreliable. So many parts have broken, and we spend a lot of time repairing and troubleshooting. If my budget gets approved, I’m going to purchase an Ultimaker 2.
So the sticking problem looks to have been under-extrusion, my extruder idler had snapped again. It’s the ecksbot extruder on a prusa i2, I love the single bolt slot in idler, but it’s quite frail. I think I might try and achieve the same feature on a Gregs.
For a second I got excited and thought Southampton NY, then I remembered that no one there knows what a RepRap is. Keep up the good work Southampton UK!
Looks awesome! Really sorry I couldn’t make it. We had a new puppy arrive on Sunday evening and it took up a lot of time. Count me in for the next meet. I might pop over on the next generic meetup.
I sold my formlabs.
Then got the B9 creator.
Ultimaker is my next printer…I’m currently a Miicrafter and a B9iner
