Rapid slicer development on @Ultimaker 's side. :+1:

Marketing garbage changing the name to “Ultimaker Cura”…instead of just Cura. They even made sure to make sure it was mentioned as much as possible. CTRL+F “Ultimaker Cura” in that document. It appears 20 damn times!

@ThantiK , Ultimaker produce the software and give it away for free, so for them to add the Ultimaker name to get some brand recognition in return for me being able to use the software free of charge is fine by me. I’m no expert with slicing software yet, but I would be more interested in the feature set and usability than whether they put their brand name in the title.

@Tyler_Larson they hired me in start of 2012, as full time employee, which really accelerated Cura development. It won’t have it’s own slicing engine if it wasn’t for the fact that Ultimaker hired me. So get your facts straight instead of spreading this kind of bullshit.

I stepped out of the Cura development out of my own choice, to go and do what I really like. Namely firmware development.

This is what Cura looked like before I joined Ultimaker:

Seems reasonable to me. Ultimaker pays for the development, keeps it open source, but asks for some credit. An awful lot of 3D printer makers recommend Cura, but I suspect lots, if not most of them, don’t contribute a nickel.

Remember Repetier-Host? The developer worked on it pretty much full time, hardly anybody contributed, so he went closed source (still free distribution) so he could afford to do terrible things like, you know, eat. Instant pariah. Evil, sell customized versions and not live in a culvert.

Despite things like the delta incident Ultimaker does a good job of supporting their competitors printers. If they ask for credit in the name, well, as long as they continue like they have, why not?

Disclaimer, while I use Cura on occasion (along with Craftware) I’m primarily a Slic3r/R-H user. And yes, I’ve contributed to both.

Hi. As a current contributor to Cura I am quite happy for Ultimaker to have their name on display in as big letters as they wish. They deserve big kudos for keeping the software open source so people like me can make additions/changes that make my prints better. Oh does that help other people too? I never thought of that!

Has 3D performance improved lately? I’m using v15 on my laptop with an Intel GPU because the 3D viewport in versions 2.x last year became unusably slow with several objects on the build plate.

@Tim_Visible The rendering isn’t as fast as the 15.04 version, as the 15.04 uses a much simpler which has completely unreadable code but was optimized for my old laptop.
On my intel mobility 3000 card it’s acceptable with a few high detailed models on the buildplate. There has been done some work on performance improvements the last few versions. But if it’s good enough for you only you can judge.

Thanks @Daid_Braam , I’ll give it another try.
