Raspberry Pi Case Prototype
I want to mill a case for my pi. Here is a unfinished and raw alpha-preview of one half… there is still a lot of space for improvements, but the board fits exactly.

I was hoping to do the same, as soon as I can get my electronics behaving consistently. What material are you using? Looks like some kind of ply. I’d be interested in more details about the model your using. I picked one from thingiverse to try. I thought I’d mill from cherry, to see what kind of finish I can get.

Are you using correct but hard to get M2.5 mounting holes or M3 like everyone else for the 2.9mm holes?
Do you plan to include a feature that presses down on the SD-card to counter bending SD cards in the flimsy SD card holder (red LED only issue on Raspi)?

@Daniel_Would I’ve tried one of thingiverse Cad-Files. It looked good but came out lousy - it was a waste of time. I don’t know why the guy has posted this wrong measured crap. So I measured my own cad file with correct z-depths. It’s not a 3d model, it’s a set of g-code toolpaths (outline, pockets & drills). The Material is 18mm screenprintingplate.

@Marcus_Wolschon
Good question. Haven’t thought about that - possibly M3s but the drillhole is actually measured to 2,9mm. The counterbending for the SD is already planned in. The next step is to make rounded holes for SPDIF and audio. It’s still a raw alpha, but I will keep this in mind.

@Jan_Przybilla The core-hole for an M3 is actually 2.5mm. But that would assume you’re using a thread-cutter afterwards.

A hole to pass an M3 bolt should be 3.2 (fine) or 3.4mm. So the 2.9mm of the Respi are as non-standard as the poor choice of a fractional metric size in the first place.

@Marcus_Wolschon Converted from standard/imperial I think. 3.175mm = 1/8 inch…

What? Standard or Imperial? You can choose only one of them.

@Marcus_Wolschon I’d guess that depends on where you’re from. Much as I’d love to consider metric to be standard, in the UK at least the legacy of imperial being the ‘standard’ is very much with us.

@Marcus_Wolschon I thought they were the same… as in SAE

rotfl

@Marcus_Wolschon Thanks for clearing this. I think @Mat_Helm nailed it. I have to order a set of both screws to try it out, first. I think it’s safe to plan with M3.

@Daniel_Would What’s the old saying… How dumb what you say is, depends on where you happen to be standing when you say it…

The metric system has only been around since the 16th or 17th century. While imperial, though it changed I think with every new king, has been with us quite a bit longer…

@Marcus_Wolschon Most things we use are outdated. Language, spelling (especially spelling) and even the metric system. A meter is to long for reference IMO, and whats the deal with all the syllables? I mean “foot” 1 syllable. “Meter” 2, “inch” 1, “millimeter” 4 (n 2.5 times the letters)… All the time you’d potentially save doing the math in your head will be lost to having to pronounce it all… ;p

And don’t get me started on celcius…

Syllables? Are you serious?

Not really, that’s what the “;p” (just kidding tongue out wink) was for. But it is time out of your life, plus I like things as simple as possible. So yes, if I was king of the world, this is something I would change. Right after the whole spelling thing of course. They made it up as they went along you know. Without rhyme nor reason most times. It’s why I always say, if you can read it, then I spelled it right. They made it up as they went along, so why can’t I… :wink:
