Replicape Rev B Arrives

Hopefully I’ll have some time to load it later and put in on a Bart Pro XL prototype.

Replicape 2

Bad news for Mac users, the USB Ethernet kext (HorNDIS) hasn’t worked with El Capitan and it doesn’t look like the devs will be able to fix it any time soon. It does work on Yosemite though. But, if you got your Mac in the last six months or so you’ll have to work around it. You can still flash it without but it won’t mount on the Mac as a BBB.

Unfortunately I’m going to pass on using the Replicape. At this point it’s still very much a beta though some of the docs it feels more like an alpha. The quality of the hardware is excellent. The idea behind the software is where I think the space should be heading, that is networked machines with client side configuration and control.

The drawback at this point is the documentation and the integration of the parts. It’s a pretty complex stack and while having the image available, there is still a fair amount to do to get a machine up and going. More than either Smoothie or an 8 bit AVR solution. While there are some docs in the wiki, they aren’t linked together and the builder is forced to hunt down info from disparate sources.

The docs are a good start but far from complete even for a late stage beta. You have to surf the source for some of the info and troll the Web and IRC for info to get the dist up and going. It’s disappointing though I’m sure eventually it can get to a space that will be less time consuming to deploy. At this point I’m going to sell the BBB and cape for $100 with the dist loaded and move on to deploying the new machines with Mini Rambo and Rambo.

I wish the project well and will be following along to see how it goes. There are a lot of good things about it.
