Running my laser makes my LCD do weird things. Sometimes I just blanks out. Today it did this.
And now it’s blanked out.
Wire length ?
@Arthur_Wolf For the LCD? It looks to be about 30". As far as the wires going from the PSU to the shifter to the X5, they’re about 16" in total length.
@K1111 That’s insanely too long. SPI works well over a few inches, on the same PCB. Using wires can get complicated very quickly, and anything as long as you are using is a huge no-no.
@Arthur_Wolf Ok. That’s good to know. It’s the one that came with the board and LCD, so I just assumed it was ok to use. I’ll order a new one.
I guess it’s caused by electromagnetic spikes generated by the laser power supply and stepper motor signals. Try to use shielded cables for the display.
I improved a similar issue in another project (with a shorter 15" length I thought would be OK). I switched to high quality, heavily shielded RJ45 cable, while grounding all unused wires. Note that it was still not fully reliable. There were noisy stepper motors all around though, will not do it anymore
While waiting for a new, shorter cable I wrapped my long cable in some thick aluminum tape. The blank outs and other weirdness has stopped!
