Sad times. Today I was trying out a 3d profiling job and my trusty rotary tool burned out. :frowning:

It suddenly dropped off to a very slow rpm. I thought maybe it was having difficulty with a cut and about to stall, but no, it was toast. Bad smell of hot electronics. No idea what has actually been damaged. Nothing super obvious to a cursory inspection, but I don’t really know what to look for.

In any case, now I have to decide. Do I switch in my dremel, buy another cheap rotary tool, or invest in a serious cnc spindle…?

Probably the brushes. Look to the sides of that black section. Do you see largish access screw caps? Usually you can replace the brushes when they wear down.

Problems appear because bearings rotate more hard, then appears overheat and rotor winding can burns.
Similar tools are very reliable, but repair it really hard.
