Seriously looking at getting into 3D printing. I could use some advice. I am looking for a good High detail printer that is easy to learn and versitile. I plan to be printing mostly 2 to 6 inch items. RPG terrain and minis. and such.
I have a hair more then $1,000 that I can budget to find a good machine and get started. Any suggestions to start pointing me in the right direction would be wonderful.
Wouldnt thar be great
I would say that you need to narrow your scope a bit more before you can start shopping. If you want really fine (jewelry style) detail, you might need to look into SLA technology. If you are certain you want to use FFM (filament) technology, you have a LOT of options. Do you want to build your own from a kit (and save $$) or are you looking to get something comes ready to go out of the box?
I bought a cheap ready out of the box printer (davinci 1.0) for $500 to see if I would like the hobby. I figured I wouldn’t drop too much $$ in case the hobby didn’t pan out, and if I wanted to upgrade later, I could always sell it used and put that $$ towards something more exact, as far as features and such i learned I wanted. After about a year I built my Rostock Max V2, looking to seel my davinci and getting something else. I am looking to get into dual extruder printing.
If you are looking to test the waters, like I did. Something cheap and out of the box would be a safe bet, but if you find you love the hobby, you might out grow it. Keep inmind the types of filament you want to use, maybe even the speeds you want to print at? It might even come down to Made in USA or overseas? heaps to think about
good luck!
also, the community here has a LOT of experience. lots great and helpful people here!
Printrbot Simple fits the bill. $599. Or Printrbot Play with y bed upgrade. $399 +$50
Yah, if you are looking to print RPG/Desktop Minis and Terrain you’re really going to be wanting a SLA/SLP style printer. An FFM printer is not in most cases going to give you the detail you’ll need.
Teh next issue is the budget, not much in that range for SAL/DLP that doesn’t lean on the DIY side of things, off the top of my head the LittleRP comes to mind :

There are some people on thingiverse that make and print a lot of board game minis and pieces you should look them up.
Terrain will print just fine on a FDM system. Miniatures not so much.
This company sells stls for printable scenery and they look great even on a fdm system. Its all about the size of the piece and the min feature size.
Monoprice select is well built and has good reviews. Heated bed and other goodies . not the fastest printer but you can modify them to print faster.
