Made more progress yesterday on the OX build.
First I built a drag pencil to help in testing without an active spindle.

Noise problem?
I spent most of the day working on what seemed to be the dreaded endpoint switch noise problem. The machine would randomly shut down with the SpDir led blinking. I decided to short out each switch in turn to see if I could prove if it was a switch bouncing or noise. In the process I noticed that if I thumped the table the machine would fail. I found that I had a intermittent connection in one of my interconnect terminal blocks that was sensitive to vibration. After fixing it my machine seems stable.
I am elated to report that everything seems to be operating properly so far and was impressed how well the drag pencils worked. You can see for yourself below.
