Since the Anniversary update, Windows 10 does not allow you to turn off auto-updates and, more importantly, auto-reboots anymore, making the OS completely unusable for 3D printing via USB. Thankfully @c_t_magazin pointed out this handy tool, which continuously readjusts Windows 10’s active hours to completely deny auto-reboot for updates!

What a piece of crap os.
You can set the connection to metered and disable auto update on metered connections. At least this was an option a few month back.
Rebooting in the middle of a movie when I told it not to is why I quit at Winblows XP. I am sure the Winblows 10 users will appreciate this news of a hack.
I’d be more concerned with installing something from a relatively unknown source. The reboot issue is problematic.
@dstevens_lv hopefully, that magazine researched the reliability and safety of the software, but I agree. This thing would have to be ran wih admin privileges and that could make it dangerous if it is not trustworthy.
After I lost a print to an automatic reboot, I got a raspberry pi to run the printer. No more of this reboot crap.
@Adam_Koncz Also you can create a local policy (http://gpedit.msc) to disable the automatic updates or customize it your way.
The windows 10 reboot thing ruins what I am otherwise finding to be quite a good experience.
Doesn’t help that it doesn’t let VMs interrupt the process or shutdown/sleep properly, so they just get powered off
@Andre_Furtado that option does not work anymore.
@dstevens_lv @NathanielStenzel c’t magazine is a reputable source. But obviously, i’m biased towards the dev @Ulrich_Decker as he’s german, too
Yet another reason to run Octopi.
Windows is a weird OS which requires the user to install (sometimes dubious) tools to remove functionality, how absurd!
I remember a woman almost crying at 3GSM congress a few years ago because her laptop decided to upgrade just a minute before she was to speak with the insulting “don’t switch me off” screen.
@Thomas_Sanladerer , German hackers ftw. Luckily I moved away from Windows except for in a VM years ago. Only thing I use it for now is Solidworks.
For the USB streaming software, https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa376877(VS.85).aspx might help?
The windows service will be installed and launched automatically.

Pomised.
Haha! It’s been Po mised
@ThantiK Linux for you?
Its absurd that WX only allows 12 “active” hours per day at that. I’m not necessarily using the computer 18 hours a day, the hours I do use vary any given day. I also don’t think the machine should need more than an hour to do an update, much less demand a 12 hour block every day.

This is suppose to be available for free (at no cost)?
If so, why does the EULA mention that you must destroy the Trial version.
Simple Answer: Bait and switch…
@ThantiK i really wish i could say that you should switch to FreeCAD, but its not mature enugh yet. I have made the switch and it is still painful at times.
I don’t have this issue. I was able to schedule times for the reboot. I notice you can disable reboot completely in task scheduler
