Smoothieboard freezing over USB

Hi,

My Smoothieboard constantly freezes when printing over USB, I have tried Pronterface & Repetier Host, both have the same results. I seem to be able to print from the web interface without issues so far.

Is there anything obvious I can check/do?

In case it’s relevant I am using the R-78E5.0-0.5 5v regulator on board.

Hi !

This is very commonly caused by ground loop or EMI problems.

Try to connect your 3D printer, and the computer controlling it, as close as possible in your electrical setup ( ideally on the same power strip ).
Use a USB cable as short as possible ( 70cm or shorter ), with ferrite beads and shielded if possible.
This can also be caused by a bad house electrical setup, or by interfering devices ( fridges, microwaves, cnc mill spindle controllers, lots of things like that ).

The ultimate solution to those problems is to use the Ethernet connection instead of USB. It shouldn’t have those problems.

Cheers.

Thanks for the rapid response, I found a shorter (about 1m) USB cable and the first print was successful, I’ll do some more testing.

Regards,

Les
