So for my wife’s new business @Humble_Maker she’s designing craft kits. We wanted to put things into the kits / projects that you couldn’t get anywhere else. A kind of hook to get people excited about the kits and the cool stuff they could make if they could be bothered to pick up a needle and make it themselves.
So, I designed some 3D printed buttons and had Shapeways make them. They came out way better than expected so I created a sprue of them to bring the cost down.
As something a little unusual, they have a cavity in the middle which allows us to fill them with coloured felt and show that colour off. It worked so well that we created a spin off product with earrings in the same design.
We’re doing them in white and black so far.
The bright felt behind the plastic works well. Makes it pop.
Thanks @Mark_Wheadon . Yeh they take some glueing together at present and the sprue design means that some of the powder stays inside and needs dusting out. I’m planning a new design which doesn’t require any gluing for faster assembly… get my printer early Jan so hopefully I’ll be able to design many more interesting things.
What printer are you getting?
Right now we’re ordering from shapeways and getting sls parts but I’ve ordered kudo3d’s Titan 1 dlp printer via the kickstarter… maybe get it by Christmas but they’ve got shipping delays. I’ve seen the details it’s capable of so I’m hopeful it’ll do what we want.
Cool. I’m hoping for a Kickstarter 3D printer in time for Christmas as well, but somewhat at the other end of the spectrum - an M3D Micro. Race you
Cool! I looked at that too. Amazing price on that. I tried to get a couple of friends to throw in with me for it - less than a ton each it’s really good value. Think mine might end up being early Jan now
we are expecting a Mr Beam laser cutter very soon though!
