So, hoping that my shapeoko will be getting sent out in the next week or so, and will be needing to get some bits for my dremel.
Can anyone recommend what bits to get? (Preferably links to sources in the UK). Looked through amazon and there seems to be a lot on there, but no idea on what the quality is like.
Mainly going to be doing plywood to start with (and MDF once I make a decent dust extractor)
Also, with an end mill, will that drill into the material or do you need to start from a pilot hole/edge?
Get an 1/8 inch, 2 flute carbide upcut endmill with center cut. That should be good for many different materials, and you can plunge it into the material like a drill.
Could also consider 1 flute if you want to cut softer plastics.
I’m not an expert though, just been doing some experiments and been reading about it.
Cool, will have a hunt around for one. Thanks. Guessing it’ll be a 3mm one over here.
Depending on your collet, standard dremel is 3.2mm shank.
I’ve got a keyless chuck attachment, so can use pretty much anything in it.
I’ve used a chuck, but the general concensus is that there will be more runout with a chuck than a collet. For precise cuts, collets are the way to go.
Carbide lasts longer than High Speed Steel (HSS), and is harder with a finer edge. It also shatters easily if you make a wrong cut in harder materials.
Upcut takes the material up and out of grooves instead of packing it down like downcut. Leaves a poor edge though.
Center cut makes it able to plunge.
Remember that the material should come out as chunks, not dust. Dust means that you’re going too fast and you’ll burn the material and wear out the bit faster.
I should clarify that too fast means RPM (spindle speed), not feed rate.
Cheers for all the info, much appreciated.
Going to be a steep (but fun) learning curve I think.
