So i am new into the 3d printing gig…i got a 101Hero 3d printer from a kickstarter campaign…easy to setup and use…especially for the price…however, i want to expand on it, maybe a bigger frame or something to get a bigger print area. I am interested in making custom parts and chassis for my rc cars. Where should i start?

Since you’ve already have a 3d printer, you could easily build parts for a new one, maybe a totally different design.
So I would start at thingiverse, take your pick, and start building, your majesty.

Guess I should have mentioned I was going for an “upgrade” to avoid a high cost for new electronics…

@MR_Slartibartfast shouldn’t it be Zaphod?
But back to your question, I don’t see how it would be easy to do that. As I see it, the hero can’t be very stable to begin with. Adding extra lenght to the pilars and arms would only make things worse very, very, fast.

What is 3D printing about? I have been hearing about it but I don’t what it is.

Speaking of thingiverse, there is an rc car group there. I know because one of my designs was collected by that group. There is one or more rc car printing enthusiasts that have shared pictures with this community of their cars amd parts.

@MR_Slartibartfast find a cartesian style printer design that you like and collect part designs. If you save files to your computer, make notes of where you got them. For thingiverse, I like to add the “thing” number to the file name. I wish they did that automatically. Feel free to ask opinions on your choice of designs.
Do you print diagonally on the bed? That can help get more part length. Some people print diagonally and slope the part upwards off of the bed to get even more part length.
You might want to look around for potential local parts for the printer after finding a design.
As for if the printer you have can be upgraded in size easily, I have no idea since I do not have one. Good luck there.

@Kenny_jide it is a way to have a machine make things. Different people will be interested in it for different reasons. It can even save lives since doctors make replicas of portions of persons body and cut into that for practice and some print parts that are inserted into the body. For some, it is just art. For some, it is rapid prototyping. I like to expand my abilities to make things and do things. I make some presents with my printer. Next time, please ask in your own thread. People will not want to ramble on about answering questions on a different topic. It would make the thread a mess.

101Hero use small motors, upgrade it to get larger printer wouldn’t be really good option since you would replace almost every parts. The board itself look like it didn’t have MOSFET for heated bed too so you might need external MOSFET for that and some mod for firmware as well if the board has free pinout.
Just build a new one is better option.

@Rien_Stouten Zaphod is correct, i chose to use the name I have because they are my 2 favorite characters from the entire series…
To everyone, thank you very much for the feedback. I will be looking into making one from scratch.

How much does it cost I got to buy one a.s.p.
