So I have reached a point with my home shop that I need to upsize my plasma table. That being said, my current setup is an openbuilds/smw3d r7 that’s been beefed up a bit. It currently sits at 1000x1000mm and is just not enough space. I have a heavily modified cnc router so I can cut my own plates, but I’m looking for some advice moving forward with a bigger build than 1500x1500, that’s about the max size with openbuilds components.

What I would like is to build a welded steel frame, and using rack and pinion. Pretty much all I have seen is cnc router parts , which looks like quality stuff. Are there any other options out there? I’m shooting for 4x8. Cncrp isn’t open source , so without having a machine/bill of materials it’s hard to reverse engineer .

Amy suggestions would be appreciated on experience with real and pinion, and if there is any other reliable diy solutions.

I saw a video on YouTube with the cast of MythBusters where they put together a modular cnc. Rack and pinion with an extruded aluminum frame. The modular feature was the interesting bit. Might be worth considering. The idea being you could expand the size at a later date if needed.

I had thought of something somewhat similar, being I have tons of openbuilds parts I could connect two c beam extrusions and have the desired length, they would be supported by the table frame . Just need to figure how to fit rack and pinion on it .

I know what you mean. I have been trying to build a machine using angle iron. Not so straight forward.

I have decided to try out building a large machine, with a light weight gantry. It will be plasma only, and I will also have a dedicated router built for other uses. I’m going to build it with openbuilds components, 2500mm x 1500 mm, or roughly 8’x 5’. For the y rails, I’m going to use 20x80, two pieces joined together. I’m going give doubled up gt3 belts a try, I know they will stretch, but I have it, why not give it a shot. Same for the x axis, but that will be a c beam. Quick and light
