so i just plugged a 12v source into my ws2811 strips how many did i just burn out? only the second one runs the code when all of them should be lit
also i still get 5 volts all the way down but only the second one seems to get any voltage on the data line should i just cut the first 2 off?
Nice! Since there are pads between the LED’s, you should be able to connect the data line directly into a another LED and find out.
Tried that doesn’t seem to do anything on any of them…
Brett, I did the same thing a few weeks ago. I thought they were the older 12v strips, but they were actually the newer 5v strips. I thought I fried all of them…when I ran colors on them, they all shut off and blanked out…some were TM1809 and some were WS2811. I was so disgusted, I went on to something else. I tried them a few weeks later and they all worked fine…made me wonder if there was a thermal shutdown issue??? Not sure… take a break…try again after they cool down… good luck…I wish you the best!
Thank you for the info I’ll try that it’s my card box for my wedding I’m stressing cuz I’m running low on lights lol
I’ve done that a few times. Somehow I got the idea that I could power up with something other than 5 V. Around Halloween time, I was combining a bunch of different systems, some that used different voltages.I was able to save some of them by removing the first 1 or 2 LEDS in the strips. You have to make sure the ones you remove are the first addressable LEDs (the input). I’m sure you already know that. But, just throwing it in for the heck of it.
Yeah thank you all so much
Painful. I had replace them all when I did that. 110 lights, down the tubes.
Brett, if you need some US-based loaner pixels I could ship you some in a pinch, especially to save a wedding! All of mine are IP68 (silicone sheath + silicone filler). WS2811, 60/m or 144/m
thank you so much @Steve_French i will keep that in mind thats so nice thank you
so i ended up cutting the first 3 off now half of it works im gonna scrap this set up and see if i can use those good ones later on
Welcome to the club?!! sigh… I’ve probably toasted about $100 worth of electronics last year from stuff like this…now, I take the extra time to label things/color code wire connections and voltages. Also, I salvaged some SMT components from those things in a recent project so save the stuff you toast.
