So I'm trying to figure out what we call things.

So I’m trying to figure out what we call things. There is a component which IS the motion controller… that’s what it does, not necessarily what we call it. (insert flashback to Alice in Wonderland). We CALL it “CNC controller”, or “3D printer controller”, or “RAMPS clone” or something like that. I would call it “motion controller”, but maybe that’s just me?

So the question is: If I’m searching for a thing to do motion control, and I want to enter keywords that will get me the best possible list of all available such devices, over the CNC and 3D printer and Laser cutter and etc… space, what keywords would I use?

I can’t use “CNC controller” because that excludes 3D printer boards and so on…

Is “motion controller” the best? Or am I missing something else that’s good?

LinuxCNC is the best motion controller. Because FLOSS.

Thanks! Because I totally asked which motion controller was best.

@James_Newton
AFAIK a motion controller is software. A motion control device is hardware. They’re related, but separate.

@Paul_Frederick I completely agree. Now google “motion control device” and see what you find.
https://www.google.com/search?q=motion+control+device
Notice how none of those gizmos show up.

“motion control device” is what they /are/ but not what they are called.

Really… read Alice in Wonderland… Chapter 8, the part about Haddocks Song:

Try https://www.google.com/search?q=hobby+motion+control+device. It’s a start in the right direction.

@James_Newton
try this http://lmgtfy.com/?q=CNC+motion+control+device

LOL… yeah, but then it’s specific to CNC… although I do see some 3D printer controllers in there… maybe that’s good enough. Thanks.

@James_Newton
the nomenclature did seem to be a bit of a bog to me. There’s definitely an issue with definitions. But I think we’ve already established that.
