so i’m undecided whether to mount my power supplies and vfd in an old pc case and mount the whole thing on the back of my enclosure or to squeeze everything into the enclosure what’s you guys opinion?
I kept my VFD exposed to be able to view the RPM and have access to the buttons (that I don’t use ever). Electronics I mounted in a box on the front side as it was easier to access when building. Now that it’s done I can put them anywhere I wish.
Keep the VFD out of it, for EMF noise reasons and possibly heat reasons.
@MoserLabs ive extended the ribbon cable to the display and controls of the vfd so will mount it in the door. all the rest of the electronics will be mounted in a separate enclosure are you saying not to put the vfd with the power supplies also?
I am always concerned with EMI/RFI, heat, dirt and dust . . . the subtle considerations that can manifest as delayed problems.
Best practices are best upfront . . . my $.02
i’m sorry but i’m not understanding are you saying putting the vfd in a separate enclosure with the power supplies, completely separate to all the rest of the electronics, is a bad idea?
No . . . I really don’t know your configuration/application/situation, I am just saying it is something to think about.
Some applications it is critical and others are more forgiving. I really don’t know your specifics so take it as a general comment.
I´m giving you my experience in building electric enclosures for machines that used VFD´s. It is normal to mount them inside the metalic enclosures. The “secret” is using electrical power cables with a metalic mesh around and the mesh connected to earth(like a tv aerial cable). Always use good earth connections, scratch box paint where necessary to connect ground terminals and put a fan to take heat out the case and a hole with an air filter for air to enter free of dust. Hope my english was readable…
I agree Jose.
