So this lept out at me…The whole video is awesome, but they mention pushing rapid prototyping boundaries but_don’t_mention the tech.

Grrr.

Yeah, yeah, proprietary secrets and all that…but I wanna know what they were using!

at the time reference you’ve provided in the link, the person says that powder printing didn’t do what they wanted. That implies SLS, probably nylon powder to be “affordable” at the level they needed. SLS also works well when there are enough models to fill the build volume, rather than one or two models being printed per batch. Animating using 3d printed models requires a printed model for each frame of video. Certainly one can use various models in multiple frames, so it would not be necessary to print 1800 models (of one body part) for a 60 second clip, but I’d be willing to bet they printed thousands in order to have enough for all necessary parts and “actors” in the video.

There didn’t appear to be any reference to the solution for SLS, though, as you suggest.

Yeah, but printing with resin isn’t particularly new, unless they’re referring to the scale of use?

SLS or other powder-based process isn’t good for fine texture or smooth surfaces, and coloring SLS process in machine won’t give fine color detail either. I would guess this might be a next generation Objet. Some other resin based system is a possibility too, but Objet can give good color, reducing the hand painting afterwards.

https://youtu.be/TyKhythKnts resin printing is one of their techniques. The also use laser cutting, etching, silicone, tiny wigs, fabrics, etc.
