So, what’s the cheapest reprap kit and where do I get it?
Rep rap or open-source?
either
PrintrBots are open source, and I would recommend them.
Cheapest announced is the peachy printer at $100 (resin, not yet shipping), cheapest to ship a unit is either qu-bd one up our makibox lt, both at $200 ( both are just clearing kickstarter orders, both pla only), cheapest with a track record is printrbot simple at $300.
I would recommend the printrbot as well.
I have a makibox a6 ht ordered. It will do ABS, but all the news and lack of clear communication are concerning me. I’d love to just build my own, but don’t really have the time for it.
@Jonathan I did too, bailed purchased a simple. No regrets, now I am running the simple and a mendel 90
How about this…
@Jonathan thats an old design, I don’t recommend it. Look for a Prusa I3 kit and buy from someone known that has an active community. You are going to need the community, trust me. These are not consumer devices, there is a steep learning curve involved.
@Jonathan you don’t want that, it will take a long time build, longer to calibrate
Stay away from China and support USA and buy the Simple.
Luis, what if Jon is not in the USA? There’s a big world outside of it you know.
@Normand_Chamberland buy the simple anyway, it’s a great starter printer
I know Nathan, but Americans who never think the outside world exists annoy the hell out of me.
@Jonathan Don’t worry about the build time for the PrintrBot Simple; it took me about 6 hours, if I recall correctly. The kit is much easier than the builds you see here where the builders have sourced each part separately.
@Carlton_Dodd Took me ~4hrs and 2 pints
The simple took me about 4 hours as well, the mendel90 took me 7 episodes of top gear and a movie.
thanks for the suggestions, i might just keep it ‘simple’
