Some folks from Cambridge Hackspace are organizing a group buy of APA102-2020 LEDs.
These are SMT-only but I have successfully reflowed them using hot air and solder paste. They are only available in large quantities by ordering a reel of 3000 for ~$600. I’m going to order a full reel on the presumption that there must be others who will want them and I can cut them into smaller quantities and ship them out.

Just for grins I asked for a quote from an Alibaba seller for 3000 of these and he came back with $0.17 each, it would save you $90.00…

We’ve done a bunch of back and forths with different sellers. Seems like 0.14 is the barebones minimum price these days not including shipping, for 1000-3000 units. Order was placed, we’ll see what we get.
