Spherical POV display: 26" bike rim spinning at 480 RPM. 40 WS2801 leds controlled with a Teensy 3.2 running FastLED, libfixmath.

Oh dang that’s intense! Glad you have it inside a box. It looks really cool!

How did you choose 480 RPM? And what kind of electrical slip ring are you using?

Thanks! Yeah the box is a key safety feature! 480 RPM gives me 16 fps (8 revs per second with both halves of the image painted simultaneously). I figured 16fps would be a good target for a decent PoV effect. It’s also about all i can muster with the WS2801 strips as they require a 1ms latch time between updates. I had the slip ring custom made and shipped from http://www.senring.com/. 4 circuits @ 10A 1500RPM max.

I’m curious why you chose WS2801 over APA102 or SK9822 (neither of which have a minimum latch time)?

@Luminous_Elements Mostly my lack of knowledge at the time I bought them. It’s my first led project. I liked the size and shape of these 30mm pixels with big chunky diffusers. Later I disvovered the latch time and understood what it meant. Oddly, it’s 500us on the datasheet but more like 1ms in reality. Already bought some APA102 strips for the next project.
