Hey everyone. Considering using the Smoothieboard for a hybrid project that needs the tool height measuring capabilities of a standard CNC cutting rig (for example GRBL now supports G38/43 commands) plus the temp regulation capabilities of a 3D printer. Would love to know if there are plans to support tool height measurement/offsets in Smoothieware.

Hey.
That’s not supported as-is ( via the G38/G43 commands ) at the moment.
But maybe we have something that can be used in a similar fashion.
Can you describe what this functionality does exactly ?
Cheers.
There will be different interchangeable probes/tools that should be referenced to the same point, so auto-detecting and offsetting the tool height would be the quickest and most accurate way of tool changing. Pretty standard feature on most CNC machines, would be nice to roll it into Smoothieware, now that it’s supported in GRBL.
Hey.
The closest we have is G30, which would allow you to probe a tool’s height, but that requires probing every time you use a new tool.
Once you know your offsets, you could also use G92 to set the offset for each tool, but that’s not automated.
We don’t have a combination of the two, which if I understand correctly, is what G38/43 do, correct ?
Edit : wait no, according to http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.5/html/gcode/gcode.html#sec:G38-probe it looks like G38 does something very similar as what G30 does …
And G43 is very similar to G92.
Great. Thanks for the info! Will try to implement with G92.
