Taking my desk-decluttering to the extreme,

Taking my desk-decluttering to the extreme, is anyone aware of a 3D printer design that’s made to hang from the underside of a high desk, rather than it take up desk space? (I use a standing desk and bar stool when I want to sit)

Most of the time it’s either sitting idle, or being left to do a print for hours.

Deezmaker’s Bukito (and other designs) has been proven to work in any orientation and position - just mount one to the the bottom of your desk upside down?

By the way, I’m doing the exact same thing with my desk! Unintended side effect: The bar stool gets annoying after a while and encourages you to get up and stand or take a break every now and then!

Great aren’t they, I wish I’d used a standing desk years ago. It’s doing my posture a world of good.

A Bukito bolted upside down? If astronauts can print in zero G why not turn one on it’s head I guess. It could have other benefits - when the bed cools the print falls off ready for the next one

I think installing a simple bracket or shelf to hold nearly any 3D printer would be simpler than deliberately hanging one upside-down.

http://reprap.org/wiki/Wally comes to my mind, something to hang on side of desk, however left with experimental stage, there are few of them running.

@Mark_MARKSE_Emery but those print failures that prematurely knock off a print would become potentially catastrophic. Rats nest wedged into the gantry.

All true. Mayve a CoreXY style design with the bed the right way up but cage upside down is what I want.

Have you considered going up? A while ago an engineer friend of mine had a set of bench test tools (oscilloscope, dvm, and signal generator) that were on a shelf that he pulled down from the ceiling when he needed them and pushed them back up when he didn’t. They were on a weighted block and tackle that made the shelf “zero” weight.

Well, should you get a 3D printer, print out and design some under-table hooks! Practically any 3D printer could be hung under a table with the right hardware.

Got a Kossel Mini, love it, but want a much bigger print bed on my next printer.

@Mark_MARKSE_Emery make HercuLien a little bigger and it could be a standing desk

I agree with @ThantiK .

A Bukito can easily print upside down, but it would be pretty awkward removing prints that way. If you’re using a sharp tool, awkwardness can mean injuries. I would be more inclined to attach hooks to the bottom of the desk and hang the printer from the convenient carry handle.

Of course, a more practical solution might simply be to put some shorter shelf or table-like piece of furniture under the desk for the printer to sit on. Using something portable like a Bukito would still allow you to move the printer to a more comfortable height for things like removing prints, changing filament, and any maintenance that might be needed.

I’d need the head modified so that the filament came in from from the side, but that’s a nice design to start from, with extended height and width.
