Thanks to FastLED and some previous top hats posted on here, for Christmas dinner parties I’ve made a Christmas Tree Top Hat. Everyone loves it and wants to know where I got it from, and then they are amazed when they find out I’ve made it myself. So much better with FastLED!

600 WS2812B soldered in one continuous length of 10m curled round some cardboard and running from an ESP8266, then mapped as an XY matrix.

Well done, great build, thanks for sharing!

Bruh… Ive wanted to make one of those in forever! just no time lol

You mean 60 pcs? I find it amazing. What’s your code, and how to build it, I have all the parts.
WannaDuino!!!

No 600 of them. Looks like the 60 per meter which sounds like a power hungry project. Not to mention expensive lol

Definitely 600 pixels. It’s 10m x 60 per metre wrapped all the way around continuously. Hard part was ensuring they lined up on top of each other. Then I have a large rechargeable battery that sits inside and on this display mode as it’s only the tree (x2) on all the time I get about 6 hours runtime

great project would love to make one of these would you be sharing the code for this

Absolute Vote wurty for and instructable win.

@Kieran_Bingham how many mAh is the battery? I used 1000mAh on my hats but theyre only 1 strip not a display :confused:

@WannaDIY
I’m afraid I didn’t really take photos as I built it - so creating an instructable will be difficult (I’m not going to tear it down now) But it’s not a particularly complicated build … solder all available lengths into one length, and construct a cardboard hat. Then glue the length of LED’s around the Cardboard hat … add a controller and program it!

@dave_windsor
Yes, at some point I’ll share the code once it’s cleaned up - it will be on my GitHub - but I’ve got some extra things to add so it won’t be until after NYE.

@Cristian_Martinez I’m not actually sure how many mAh the battery stores. I think it contains 3 of the lipo 18650 style rechargeable batteries. It’s a branded portable phone re charger, and doesn’t state it’s capacity (it was a freebie, but it’s bulky). I already had the LEDs from a previous project - so I was ‘recycling’ them to this project… otherwise, yes I agree - it would be a very expensive Hat. (I guess it is anyway)

Lol ok thanx anyways. Look forward to you sharing your code :slight_smile: i so wanna make one like it!

This is a great idea! I’m looking forward to making something wearable at some point.

Would love to blog this on Adafruit. Can you load your video to Youtube? It really is awesome and I love your animation!

@Leslie_Birch Hi Leslie, I’ve thought about this, and I’m happy for you to write a blog post, unfortunately - I’m not sure what material you would need from me. As mentioned, I didn’t create a ‘building it’ video - and I don’t want to tear it down to rebuild for (hopefully obvious) reasons :smiley:
