A search for ABS or PLA smoothing should turn up the results you’re looking for. something like these:

If you are smoothing ABS look into acetone options that do no involve a hot plate. I soak a paper towel in acetone and stick it to the bottom of a paint can with a magnet, then place the can over the top of the part. The vapors are more dense than air and will sink around the part. Smoothing will progress more slowly that hot plate methods (~45 min) but than affords you more control. Have fun!
