The best 3D printer Buyers Guide you’ll ever find

Right, I’m actually wanting one but I have no clue what best to get and/or, where I can download stuff to print out etc cos I want to make money out of something cos not worth buying one if you can’t make money from it. Any ideas or advice?

It’s probably a good idea to have a reason other than wanting to make money as a justification for buying a 3D printer.

3Dhubs, and other similar services, are full of people attempting to make money from printing objects.

If you want to use a 3D printer to augment a hobby or you are a talented artist or 3D designer who wishes to express your talents with a 3D printer then go right ahead.

There is much to learn about 3D printing: the technology, the machine, the materials, design, printing and finishing. It’s not a simple case of buy a printer and start making money straight away.

Oh. Well I’m about as good at art and design as North Korea is at peace keeping lol. I just fancied the idea of having a hobby and making a few notes out of it. There must be something I can do?

Having a new hobby is a good reason. Besides the desire to print to make money it is a good idea to consider your needs regarding what types of objects you might wish to print.

You can then balance the cost vs. features for any printer purchase based on that. From there you can investigate the relative merits of individual printers.

So where can I go to find stuff I can print? I’ll do some homework first to find out what’s best. I’m looking for a new hobby desperately seeing as I can’t do my old one anymore.

This community page used to have some links to this sort of thing but the recent Google+ redesign seems to have removed them.

http://thingiverse.com, http://youmagine.com and http://repables.com are three that I can immediately think of. http://yeggi.com is a general 3D model search facility.

Thanks Neil, you’ve been very helpful. Cheers.

@Simon_Hartley We compiled a list of 3D model repositories that may be useful: http://3dprintingforbeginners.com/3d-model-repositories/
