The Frankenbot lives!! It’s taken a lot of work to get it running but finally, finally! It is printing.
Thanks to all that have helped out and supported the project along the way. And a special thanks to @Brook_Drumm for donating parts and helping with all my questions.
The project was to build a printer out of the parts donated by Brook, but once we got the kits in at my school, we suddenly got 34 students that wanted printers. We are currently making the laser cut panels and now the printed parts for the rest of the printers.
After the printers are finished, every student is going to print out a prosthetic hand by Enable that will be donated. It’s a way to give back to the community just like Brook did for us.
Welcome to the club of 3D printer designers/builders!! Still a pretty small club in the world, relatively speaking. Pushing through all the problems and challenges is so valuable. You can put this on your resume. You are a bonafide expert now. Now to become an expert in prototyping printer improvements and other prototypes. If I knew every person would do as much as you did, I’d give away a lot more kits!
One thing I want to say that I don’t say lightly is: you made a beautiful printer. The printed parts, symmetry and overall aesthetic is really nice. You have a good eye. That is hard to teach. To me, you have a real gift. Some people have it naturally- it’s really neat to see. Very hard to find.
You are gonna have a blast helping everyone build. Keep us all informed with updates and pictures. And publish those files!
I’ve sold out of the bearing blocks and won’t be making any more. Would you be willing to modify the design to work with regular bearings? Email me if you are up for it and I’ll send some to you. I would love for others to benefit from your design. A full bom and instructions would really give this thing legs. We could put a price on what it costs to build it so people would know what they are getting into. I really think this has great value.
Thank you so much @Brook_Drumm !! It really means a lot to hear that from you. I do love symmetry and having a clean look. It’s been a heck of a project and am proud to have it printing.
The files will be released in about a week. Just want to get another one built before I do. It will be completely open source and I’m gonna try to get it in as an official Reprap. I’ll also have build videos to show how to put one together.
And I’ll shoot you an email about the bearings. I’ll for sure change it.
As for build area it is: 10in x 8in x8in
Thank you so much again Brook!! Really happy and proud that you like it. Hope that we can get more out there.
@Jeff_Kes yes!! It will be an open source design. I’m going to release the design and BOM in about a week or two. I am converting to The new bearings that @Brook_Drumm has so it might take a couple days to get them in.
The files for the laser cut parts will be open source and I’ll share a link publicly and on the community.
A hardware kit is available via Printrbot. All you need after that is a 12v 6A Power supply, a sheet of glass, and the frame/hardware components and you are ready to go!!
