The printrbot Ubis13S is now available. We have learned a lot from the Ubis 13 and made a less finicky version that will suit anyone printing below 270C. It is much more tolerant of all types of filament -especially if you have had any jamming issues. Our learning: very few. Actually need an all-metal hotend. Worship a little custom tool to help change the tip and throw in an extra tip too. It’s $75 assembled. All parts are replaceable.
The product description says no fan required, but the manual says it’s recommended. Is there a certain temperature limit you can stay under without needing the fan maybe?
I also notice that the manual doesn’t mention PrintrBot at all, and even says “Authorized Ubis hot end vendors.” Is Ubis exclusivity on the way out?
It’s not all-metal. It uses a Teflon tube, a peek heartbreak and a brass melt zone. It’s got a lower max temp (270c) and is more tolerant of cheaper filament.
Second the noisy fan. I have been using the normal ubis for the last couple weeks and then I put back on my all metal and it was way too loud again. But that happens with all all metal hotends as far as I can tell.
I’ll be ordering one. I only print ABS as my high temp filament so it should be good.
I presume there is no real heat creep even without a fan?
Take the fan off, put a drip of silicon oil on the shaft head under the sticker and it will be silent an work like a charm. Did this about 4 months ago a still quiet.
Big price jump over the ceramic and #13 Ubii. Other than correcting those production problems how is this better then the other hot ends? Is there a trade-up program for the subset of 13 users that are having problems? My year old all metal Ubis has worked great (other than the pesky fan noise, will try the silicone trick) since it was installed, and iirc the 13 was to make it less expensive to produce rather than work better.
On page two of the well written manual, lower right corner, you call something a crescent wrench. It’s not, it’s a combination wrench, which combines an open end and box wrench. A Crescent® wrench is an adjustable wrench (a darn good one), but not what you show. Might have an issue without the ®, IANAL.
Those of us old enough to remember the proud few who received the original black Ubis sleeve, but were unlucky and didn’t receive one, are hoping you’ll bring it back as an option.
@Brook_Drumm I don’t have any problems with my Ubis 13, I intend to use it (and the spare Ubis 13 I have) on my highly customized PrintrBot Plus v2.1. But if trading the Ubis 13 in for the 13S is an option, that would be awesome!
I’ve had the chance to test one , it works quite well. It’s looking like a good replacement for the ceramic ubis, which I found to be a real workhorse. No noisy fan is a real plus, too.
You are right. I was wrong. We couldn’t do the $59 and get it to distributors. I apologize for speaking too soon. It’s one of my weaknesses, honestly. My CFO is rightly insistent about a 50% margin. We give up to 25% to distributors so we can still make money on it. Sometimes I get jealous of China prices, but spotty quality and the knock offs are just not worth it. We make these here in California. Sorry to disappoint on this one. I’ll learn from this one and wait to post pricing until everything is vetted on future posts.

No problem. I understand business has to make money. I was really excited when I saw the earlier projected price point because I thought I might be able to squeak one in. But, it’ll have to wait.
I didn’t even know 3D printers could be bought by us peons. Cool! I think it would be cool to have one, but don’t even know what I would do with one. Afraid my 60 year old brain is struggling with thinking of printing in multi dimensions.
