The sides of my print are very rough, does anyone know why this might be?

That looks like “ringing” to me.

Either too much or too little material inside your printer

You could always just sand it down

Something is shaking while printing. Check belt tension. Check your rods and bearings are moving freely. Your acceleration settings might be wonky depending on what firmware or slicer you’re using.

@Ross_Hendrickson what speed do you recommend I print at? I’m using Cura as my slicer, am currently printing at about 50 mm/s

if you are using gt2 belts with small idlers (without teeth) it may very well be because of the belt slipping on teeth. check the stripes distance - is it roughly 2mm?

I’m thinking the top material is too soft, and its sagging inbetween the supports. Assuming none of the other recomendations work, either add more fill in the middle or lower the temp of the extruder to stiffen the filament. try some bridging test pieces to dial in the right temp.

What material is it? PLA?
What temperature of the nozzle?
It looks like the temperature is too high…

@S_B11 Material is PLA and temp is 215c. Based on all the other suggestions I think it’s a combination of the frame being to flimsy and the speed being too high

If you have belt tensioning springs, remove them. You may need to get a better quality belt… gt3 belts may eliminate the ringing all together

All depends on what kind of printer you have and the kind of firmware. If you change your speeds and the banding changes you know it is affected by your acceleration. Also look at your jerk settings. I would do a physical check before worrying about software first imho.

I agree that it might be something mechanical, but it’s always nice to know you have your extrusion amount and temperature dialed in. I had a Prusa i3 that was notoriously wobbly on the Z axis. Have you tried doing any calibration pieces on this filament? I’d try this piece:

Some videos that helped me with this are at https://reliabuild3d.com/instructions/. Part of your print looked like a section in the bottom video about having your temperature too low. missing/deleted image from Google+

This looks like ringing to me. The bands are running in the vertical direction. Check all your joints and parts for anything that wiggles. Lower your print speed to 40-45 and lower your jerk and acceleration settings and see if it makes any difference. Somewhere you will find settings that don’t trigger the harmonics of your system.

Yry how to use a smaller layers setting the smaller they are the smooth unless there’s something like a temperature problem
