This difficult burr puzzle costs ~£100 to buy (when it is even available, which it usually isn’t). But the plans are freely available (at http://puzzlewillbeplayed.com/12PieceBurr/HeavyHeadedBurr/ ) and none of the pieces needs support so I printed my own copy.
I made up three separate plates of four pieces that would just fit on my Mendel90 and printed each plate in a different colour ABS. Each plate took 7 hours to print and the whole puzzle took another hour to assemble.

I use a free program called Burr Tools. It can be used to:

  • transcribe puzzle pieces from drawings
  • export STL files (add a 0.1 mm offset for a good fit)
  • find solutions for interlocking puzzles
