This is a strip of lights that goes inside of a santa hat. It plays other animations, but the main thing that I wanted to show off is how simple (and cheap) it is to get basic das-blinken-lights.

These strips are $7/meter from http://gree-leds.com so $3 for 13 pixels.

From Jameco:

  • 12 cents for a socket
  • $2 for an attiny85
  • $1 for a 3AAA battery holder with a switch
Total BOM ~$6.12 for a glowing whatever.

I used 6 solder joint total (3 on the light strip, twist together the power and red wire and attach to pin 8 of the socket, twist together ground and black wire and attach to pin 4 of the socket, attach data wire to pin 2 of the socket).

To program the tiny I have a little jig I made (following the MIT High Tech Low Tech pages). Sparkfun also has an awesome looking ATTiny programmer that I would totally get if I didn’t already have my jig and isp programmer.
